Weeks after the Eaton Fire tore through Altadena, California, a group of dads who all lost their homes are finding solace in a familiar ritual—playing baseball together. For a couple of hours once a week, their casual gathering has transformed into an essential support system, helping the men process their losses and adjust to being displaced.
The group originated from a chat called "Altadena Sandlot," started by Andrew Holmquist in 2023 to connect local dads for baseball practice. After the fire, the get together evolved into a place where they shared information, vented frustrations, and offered emotional support. The Sunday game marks a small step toward normalcy during what’s been an intensely difficult time.
During their gathering, the men talk about insurance adjusters, rebuilding regulations, and the emotional toll on their families. Though it feels different from their past games at Farnsworth Park, they plan to continue their weekly ritual, reinforcing the bonds that have helped them navigate one of the most challenging moments of their lives.
