Joe Carni, the chair of the Onondaga County Republican Committee, is stepping down from his position today (February 5). Carni, who has led the local GOP since February 2024, announced his resignation to focus on his family's business, Thanos Import Market, located on Green Street in Syracuse.
Carni's decision comes halfway through his two-year term as chair. The Onondaga County Republican Committee will convene tomorrow night to select a new chairperson. The candidates vying for the position are Joe Bick, Salina town supervisor Nick Paro, and Chuck Iavarone.
Carni, 34, has been a prominent figure in the local political scene, and his departure marks a significant change for the committee. The new chairperson will have the task of continuing the work Carni started and leading the committee through upcoming elections and political challenges.
