Fines possible if sidewalks not cleared in Grand Rapids

Ice is in the forecast for Wednesday night which means by Friday, property owners in Grand Rapids will need to have their sidewalks cleared or risk possible complaints and fines.

The city of Grand Rapids gives residents 24 hours after the end of a winter weather event to clear the snow or ice off public sidewalks before neighbors or passersby can submit anonymous complaints.

The complaints are deemed legitimate, the city will mail a warning giving the home owner 48 hours to clear the snow or ice.

If the work is not completed, the city will send a contractor to complete the work and send the bill to the home.

The city issued 31 work orders in January and 72 so far in February.
