Central New York is experiencing another surge in flu cases, with the latest data showing significant increases across the region. During the week ending January 25, Onondaga County reported the highest number of infections, with 617 cases. Oneida County followed with 277 cases, and Oswego County recorded 187 cases. Since the start of the flu season in October, there have been over 230,000 confirmed flu cases in New York State.
Health experts emphasize the importance of getting a flu shot, practicing good hygiene, and avoiding large crowds to reduce the risk of infection. The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) compiles and analyzes flu activity data year-round, producing weekly reports during the flu season, which typically runs from October through May. Due to the ongoing high levels of flu activity, the NYSDOH has extended its surveillance season beyond May until flu activity decreases.
According to the NYSDOH, flu-related hospitalizations have reached 5,818 statewide. Health officials urge residents, especially those at high risk for flu complications, to get vaccinated and practice good hygiene, such as frequent hand washing, to reduce the risk of severe illness.
