A 10-year-old boy was injured by debris from the Philadelphia plane crash while trying to protect his younger sister, per ABC News.

Andre Howard said he was taking his three young children to get donuts after school when the family heard a loud bang. The sound came from the medical transport jet crash that killed all six people on board.

Howard tried to position his truck so the donut shop could act as a shield against debris flying in the area. During the ordeal, Howard heard his 10-year-old son, Trey, yell from the backseat "Get down, baby girl" as he used his body to shield his younger sister from the debris.

In his efforts to protect his sister, Trey was hit with a piece of plane debris or glass, part of which was sticking out of his head.

"I turn around and he has metal out the side of his head," Howard recalled.

Trey was taken to the hospital, where he had to undergo emergency brain surgery. Howard said he was told there was a high likelihood his son wouldn't survive.

However, Trey's procedure was successful and he has been moved from the intensive care unit to a regular room, where he is continuing to recover from the incident.

"Am I OK? No. Is his mother OK? No. Is his family OK? No. But we are going to be strong for him every step of this process to get him back to full strength," his father said.

According to Howard, his son's first words after the procedure were "Daddy, did I save my sister?"

Howard called Trey a "superhero" for his selfless act of bravery.

"Thank God my son is still here. Thank God we didn't go into the flame," Andre Howard said. "I'm just happy he is here."
