President Donald Trump plans to attend Super Bowl LIX at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, making history as the first sitting commander in chief to attend the game, Punchbowl News founder Jake Sherman initially reported, which was later confirmed to the New York Post by federal law enforcement sources.

"NEWS: President Donald Trump is expected to go to the Super Bowl this weekend in New Orleans," Sherman wrote on his X account.

Trump's attendance will increase the already high level of security expected for Super Bowl LIX at Caesars Superdome one month after an ISIS-inspired terrorist attack took place during a New Year's Eve event on Bourbon Street, which resulted in 14 deaths and dozens of injuries, as well as the College Football Playoff Sugar Bowl being postponed one day.

Then-Vice Presidents Spiro Agnew, George H.W. Bush and Al Gore had all previously attended Super Bowls while Bush later attended Super Bowl XXXVI as a former president. The back-to-back defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs will face the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, two years removed from their Super Bowl LVII matchup.

Trump had previously attended the College Football Playoff National Championship Game while in office during his first term in 2020, as well as the 2021 World Series as a former president.

The Chiefs look to become the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls, having won three of the last five and will appear in five of the last six.
