In preparation for the Super Bowl on Sunday (February 9), law enforcement across New York State is intensifying efforts to curb impaired driving. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the statewide campaign, which began on Monday (February 3) and will continue through Sunday. The initiative, funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, focuses on underage drinking enforcement, increased patrols, and sobriety checkpoints.

During last year's Super Bowl weekend, officers arrested 262 individuals for impaired driving and issued 8,388 tickets. The campaign aims to improve these numbers by encouraging safe driving practices. New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James emphasized that drivers should expect increased enforcement efforts, including sobriety checkpoints and operations targeting underage drinking.

Governor Hochul stated, "We have no tolerance for anyone endangering themselves or others on the road." She urged everyone to plan for a safe ride home, whether by designating a sober driver, using rideshare services, or taking public transportation. State DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder echoed this sentiment, advising drivers to avoid distractions and plan for a sober ride home.

The campaign is part of a national initiative to ensure road safety during the Super Bowl weekend. Anyone who notices suspicious activity on the roads is encouraged to dial 911 immediately.
