The City of Waukee will hold a special election on March 4, 2025 to determine the future of the Waukee Municipal Gas Utility.

"The City Council, staff, and the Mayor have heard concerns about the cost of natural gas in Waukee compared to neighboring communities," said Heather Behrens with the City of Waukee. "It seems like a time to ask voters what they think, and if more than 50% approve, we will pursue a sale of the gas utility."

On Monday, the Waukee City Council approved a resolution to move forward with an offer from Mid-American Energy for a potential sale of the city-owned utility, if voters approve the referendum, and the sale is approved by the Iowa Utilities Commission.

"They'd take over all the infrastructure, all the billing, all the customer service," Behrens said. "That would probably happen later in 2025."

If less than 50% of voters approve of the referendum, the City of Waukee will continue to own and operate the Waukee Municipal Gas Utility. The soonest Waukee could vote on a potential sale again would March of 2029.

Voting for the special election will be at three different polling locations in Waukee. Registered voters can go to any of the listed locations below regardless of their normal precinct.

  • Waukee Lutheran Church of Hope, 305 NE Dartmoor Dr, Waukee
  • Westview Church, 1155 SE Boone Drive, Waukee
  • Waukee United Methodist Church, 2075 SE LA Grant Parkway, Waukee

There will also be in-person absentee/early voting available at the Dallas County Auditor's office. You can learn more information on the City of Waukee's website.
