Rhode Island U.S. Representative Gabe Amo is criticizing Donald Trump's tariffs, saying the President is starting a chaotic trade war at the expense of American workers and the whole economy.
In a statement, the Democratic lawmaker says President Trump is jacking up costs for Americans and the "Trump tax" will hurt those building homes, raise energy costs and hike everyday prices on staples at the grocery store.
Amo says the president and his billionaire friends may not have to worry about costs most Americans face when paying for groceries, filling their gas tanks or trying to afford a home - but working-class Rhode Islanders and Americans do.
Meantime, Senator Jack Reed said: “It’s unclear how effective these tariffs will be, but it’s already clear that American consumers will take a financial hit. This is a de facto ‘Trump tax’ and it will cost Americans in every state.
“President Trump should take a smarter, more balanced approach to our economy that focuses on helping American families and creating opportunities for sustainable growth.”
President Trump says he will speak with officials in Canada about his plan, but he does not expect there to be much in the way of progress.
