Bulldogs falter to Sacramento State in grueling match

FRESNO, Calif.- Fresno State saw one of their toughest competitors thus far in Sacramento State, in a match that lasted five hours on Sunday. Bulldogs saw their first loss this season after coach Dy's best career start at Fresno State (3-0) to Sacramento State at Spalding G. Wathen, 4-3.

How it Happened

It was a forty-five minute delay till doubles stepped on, due to wet courts. Doubles play went smooth for the Bulldogs as they clinched the first point. Matilde Magrini and Yinglak Jittakoat finished first on court one defeating Ejsmont/Saulevich, 6-1. Eliza Dunbar and Paulina Montiel clinched with a 6-2 win over Ferreros/Walker.

Another delay for top three singles matches as courts continued to dry. Singles action started with courts 4-6.

Montiel dropped both sets to give Sacramento their first point of the match. Dunbar started up 3-0 over Saulevich before the Hornet tied it up 3-3. The sophomore fought back but dropped the first set, 5-7. Dunbar forced a third set with a 6-2 win. Dunbar saw one win in the third set but untimely fell to Saulevich, 6-1. Hornets' then led, 2-1.

Andjela Lopicic fell into a tense match up against Pranyte that tied up 5-5 in the first . The pair pushed it to 6-6 for Lopicic to grab the tiebreaker for the first set win. Hornet's Pranyte handed Lopicic a 6-2 loss in the second set. The junior came back in the third after trailing 1-3 to sit one game down 4-5. Sacramento grabbed their third point on the day.

Sofia Pizzoni sparked the comeback with a third set win over Walker, 6-3. For the Bulldogs second point of the day.

Jittakoat started her match against Baudouin (1-2) but paused due to court conditions. The pair found themselves back on the court more than an hour later. Jittakoat started trailing prior to the restart for a comeback on a 6-3 win. Jittakoat looked to keep the Bulldogs chances at a comeback alive with a two set win, 6-3, 6-1. Fresno State tied at 3-3

Last to start their singles match. Magrini dropped the first (4-6) and forced a third set with a 6-2 win over Ferreros. Magrini was the Bulldogs' fighting chance at a win. Magrini dropped the third set to Ferreos, 7-5.

Up next: Fresno State returns to the road as they face off against Washington and Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo on Feb. 8-9.
