An elderly Houston-area man has had bail set at $80,000 following his arrest Saturday night.
Police say he shot a man at a Pasadena Memorial High School band competition, but the incident had no relationship to the Texas Color Guard Circuit percussion competition just a few yards away.
Pasadena police say 83-year-old Dennis Erwin Brandl Jr. was first noticed lurking behind a pillar at the school, but then leaned out and opened fire, hitting Dwight Benjamin in the shoulder.
Brandl was then stopped by an off-duty Houston Police officer, who tackled him and was joined by others to restrain Brandl while security guards moved in.
There were no other injuries.
Investigators are looking at any possible connection between the suspect and the man he allegedly shot.
Brandl has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, for which prosecutors requested a judge set bail at $500,000.
According to Pasadena police, however, Brandl had said he was being chased by someone and feared for his life, so there were concerns he might be having a mental breakdown.
With such concerns -- and word that Brandl had a US Navy honorable discharge and no prior record -- a judge set bail at $80,000.
But the judge also stipulated that the suspect must not have alcohol, drugs or firearms and must have no contact with the shooting victim or his family -- and must stay away from Pasadena Memorial High School.
Brandl is set to appear before a judge on Tuesday.
