FRESNO, Calif. – Since its inception in 1922, Fresno State Baseball has been the Pride of the Valley; a program that directly reflects the relentless pursuit of excellence that the region is known for.
Fresno State Athletics is proud to embrace a new era of Bulldog Baseball, recognizing the program by the name its foundation was built on: The Diamond 'Dogs.
"The Diamond 'Dogs name is deeply rooted in the culture of the baseball program for generations," Fresno State Head Coach and 2008 College World Series Champion Ryan Overland said of the nickname. "It's a unique identity for a program with its own unique history on a local and national scale."
The nickname originated on a spring Saturday in 1979 when local sports reporter Dan Taylor referred to the club as the Diamond 'Dogs in a playful nod to David Bowie's 1974 album of the same title. The moniker resonated with the athletes, coaching staff and fans, and has been associated with the team since.
More than just a name, the Diamond 'Dogs celebrate the heart and soul of the Valley, paying homage to the generations of alumni and fans who have created a dynasty on the diamond, unmatched in collegiate baseball.
The Diamond 'Dogs boast 246 MLB draft picks, 45 conference championships, 36 NCAA Tournament appearances and a National Championship. The club is also the only Division I program in college baseball with three consecutive head coaches with 600+ wins each.
With the 2025 season on the horizon, the Diamond 'Dogs will continue recognizing the past and innovating the present in a new era built on pride and tradition.
