Community Connect hooks you up and helps you out with resources you can use and this time, we're doing it for Black History Month—which we’re still celebrating no matter what!
Today is the first day of the month-long celebration of Black culture, designed to encourage people to learn more about and build on our culture's rich traditions. Carter G. Woodson, the “father of Black history,” chose February for the celebration because it is the month of both Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln’s birthdays, who were instrumental in ending slavery.
And Rosa Parks Day, which honors the civil rights activist who famously refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a bus in 1955, starting the pivotal Montgomery Bus Boycott of the Civil Rights Movement, is Tuesday, February 4th on her heavenly birthday. She would’ve turned 112 years old.
Navy Pier is celebrating Black History Month with free programs showcasing the artistic and cultural vibrancy of the Black community. Starting today from 12-6pm and every Saturday in February, the Black Makers Market will take over the Family Pavilion Food Experience Corridor, featuring local artisans, designers, and entrepreneurs’ original products for sale, along with art activities at free Black History Month workshops, hosted by the Women’s Live Artist Studio.
The Chicago Park District is also hosting free events at parks across the city all month long in celebration of Black History Month.
Now, more than ever, get out to celebrate, honor, and support our community. & Remember, our community moves forward in the best way possible when we all get the help we need and give the help we can!
