Marist College in Poughkeepsie has officially changed its name to Marist University. The transition was celebrated on Wednesday (January 29) at the newly renovated Dyson Center, with a performance by the Marist Band and participation from students, faculty, alumni, and local officials. Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino declared the day as Marist University Day.
The name change aims to reflect Marist's growth into a more comprehensive and global institution, as noted by President Kevin Weinman. He emphasized the university's commitment to maintaining its core values while expanding its reach and opportunities for students. The New York State Board of Regents approved the change in December, following revised criteria for university status.
Marist University now serves over 5,000 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students, offering classes locally, online, and at its branch campus in Italy. The university hopes to attract a broader range of students from across the United States and internationally.
The celebration included the unveiling of a new logo, featuring a red shield with a white "M" in elaborate script, and a new catchphrase, "Inspired to do more." The event was also marked by watch parties at Marist's campuses in Dublin and Florence, and a new commercial aired during the celebration will be broadcast at the upcoming Marist men's basketball game.
