When Weezer covered Toto's 1982 classic "Africa" back in 2018, it seemed like the '80s hitmakers were all for it. At the time, the band's founder and guitarist Steve Lukather said "nobody appreciates [the cover] more than all of us at Toto" and the band even covered Weezer's "Hashpipe" during a show. But in a new interview with Matt Pinfield, Lukather's changing his tune and saying things "got weird" with Weezer's frontman Rivers Cuomo.
The topic came up when Pinfield mentioned Cuomo "loving" "Africa."
“I don’t know about him loving the song, man. I don’t think that’s the case at all," Lukather said before divulging that he didn't think the band covered the song in good faith. “I think he did it to take the piss out of it and it blew up in his face,” he admitted. But Lukather's getting the last laugh. “Now he’s gotta play it every night!” he pointed out.
He then revealed that things "got weird" when he tried to have an interaction with Cuomo. “I tried to reach out to this guy and be friendly and it just got weird,” he explained. “I don’t want to get into it, but peace and love. It was good for them, it was good for us. God bless.”
