Governor Kathy Hochul has unveiled her $252 billion budget plan, which includes additioanl funding for the Central New York region. The plan allocates $220 million to Upstate University Hospital for a new emergency room and other facilities. This funding is part of a broader $650 million modernization and revitalization effort for SUNY hospitals, with SUNY Downstate receiving $450 million. Although the amount falls short of the $450 million requested by local officials, Upstate leadership expressed gratitude, stating it provides a solid foundation for necessary upgrades. The current emergency department is over 60 years old and struggles to meet demand as the region's only Level 1 trauma center.

Additionally, Governor Hochul proposes a $30 million investment to transform the Expo Center at the New York State Fairgrounds into a year-round concert venue. This renovation aims to enhance the acoustics and make the space suitable for concerts and festivals.

Lawmakers and the governor have until April 1 to finalize and pass the budget. The proposed allocations are part of a larger effort to improve infrastructure and services across New York State.
