Barry Michael Cooper, best known for his work on the 1990s movie New Jack City, has died, per TMZ. He was 66.
According to TMZ, the Maryland Chief Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that the famed writer and producer died on Tuesday (January 21). His cause of death remains unclear.
The 66-year-old wrote several iconic movies in the 1990s, including New Jack City, which starred Wesley Snipes and Chris Rock, Above the Rim, starring Tupac Shakur, and Sugar Hill. Cooper also produced She's Gotta Have It, a television series based on Spike Lee's film that aired from 2017 to 2019.
Cooper started his career as a journalist for Spin Magazine, Village Voice, and other publications.
Details surrounding his death haven't been publicly released. Cooper last posted on Instagram less than week ago on January 15 for Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday.
