The popular Chinese-owned social media video app TikTok is no longer available for use in the U.S.
TikTok went dark for users across the country late Saturday. People trying to get on the app have received the following message: "Sorry, TikTok isn't available right now. A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can't use TikTok for now."
Apple and Google’s app stores are prohibited from offering the app under a bipartisan law signed by President Biden last spring. TikTok’s China-based parent company, ByteDance, failed to sell the platform by Sunday, leading to the ban of the app in the United States.
The app did give a shout-out to President-elect Donald Trump, saying: "We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned!"
In a Sunday morning post to Truth Social, Trump had just two words: "SAVE TIKTOK!"
According to Trump's pick to be national security adviser, Rep. Michael Waltz, Trump is reportedly considering options to actually save the app and keep it running in the states. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew is expected to be attending Trump's Inauguration in D.C. Monday.
