It’s no secret that grocery shopping has gotten more expensive, with the cost of food climbing since the start of the pandemic and continuing to go up. Research shows that the cost of food consumed at home in the U.S. rose by an average of 21.7% from February 2020 to fall 2024. But some parts of the country have it better than others and a new study highlights where those are.
- Food Label Maker has just come out with their report on the states with the highest and lowest average grocery store prices.
- To come up with their list, their research team analyzed grocery costs per person in 2024, compared those prices in each state to the national average, then tracked changes in pricing over the last two years.
- After crunching the numbers, they determined that Texas has the lowest grocery prices in the country.
- In Texas, grocery costs are 9.7% below the national average, even with a 27.16% increase over the last two years.
- Michigan is a close second, and they’re the only state to actually see a decrease in grocery store prices over the last two years. It was a drop of just 0.98%, but they still went down.
- At the bottom of the list is Hawaii, making it the state with the most expensive grocery store prices. Alaska is next, followed by California, Massachusetts and New York.

- I heard that bananas are cheaper. I don't eat bananas.
