When wildfires erupted in Los Angeles County last week, 29-year-old construction worker and lifelong animal lover Jacob Deutsch sprang into action to help. Watching the "nerve-wracking" updates from his Beverly Hills home, he was concerned for the safety of horses and livestock in the area. So he offered his assistance via social media and began a rescue operation.
Using his 55-foot trailer, built to hold 10 horses, Deutsch offered a lifeline to overwhelmed and desperate livestock owners from fire-affected areas like the Palisades, Malibu, and Topanga. He and his wife, Ashley, opened their property to house some of the animals and transported others to safe havens and rescue facilities. Over several days, he rescued more than 90 animals, including horses, donkeys, and livestock, sometimes venturing within 100 feet of the fires.
Deutsch expressed gratitude to those who opened their barns and corrals to help strangers, and he says that all the animals he rescued are "safe and sound," but he’s not done with his rescue efforts. He plans to keep helping as long as the wildfires persist, saying, "I like to help people or animals in any way I can. I always have."
