LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A man who pleaded no contest to murdering his 83- year-old father at the Temple City home they shared was sentenced Friday to 15 years to life in state prison.

John Daniel McHugh, 57, entered his plea to second-degree murder Monday as he was set to go on trial for the April 24, 2020, killing of his father, Michael McHugh.

John McHugh shot his father after an argument, according to Deputy District Attorney Fred Engell.

The defendant's father was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to the upper body, authorities said.

The younger McHugh was detained and taken to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Temple station for questioning, sheriff's officials said.

He was subsequently arrested about an hour later and has remained behind bars since then, jail records show.

Addressing the defendant directly, the victim's daughter said John McHugh "murdered our own father in cold blood" and said he had shown no remorse.

"You murdered him while he sat in a chair," Kathleen Vitiello said. "You are where you belong."
