A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect in the Lynchburg area with a Winter Weather Advisory in the Roanoke area through Saturday morning.

Snow is expected to arrive later this afternoon and evening, heavy at times, and sticking to the roadways.

The National Weather Service has upped its snow accumulation prediction for Lynchburg to 4-6 inches with 2-4 inches expected in Roanoke.

Higher amounts are possible in the mountains.

❄️❄️❄️

ABC13 - WSET Meteorologist Will Stafford breaks down the storm for us:

HEADLINES:

  • Snow arrives later tonight
  • Dry weekend
  • Warming Monday

FORECAST:

Another cold start to the day that is basically priming the ground to get ready for some snowfall, that will stick pretty easy once it starts.

This afternoon the clouds will be on the increase.

Snow moves from west to east across the area. It should start in Lynchburg by around 4-6P, same start time for Danville, and about and hour earlier in Roanoke. Highs before the snow reach the 30s

HEAVIEST SNOW is between Friday 7pm to midnight, then snow ends before Saturday 7am.

SLOW ACCUMULATION as this is dry snow, and the snow rate per hour is low.

SNOW TOTALS are slightly higher for Southside, but we won’t see a huge snowfall range. During the last weekend’s snow, the amounts gradually increased north of LYH-- this time it’s the opposite. Danville and Southside will get more snow than Charlottesville. We have Danville in the 2" to 4" range, we have Roanoke at 1" to 3'.

MOUNTAINS GET MORE snow.

Things improve pretty quickly on Saturday and the rest of the weekend. Don’t look now, but we’ll be in the middle 40s by Monday before another blast of chill arrives in the middle of next week.
