New York State is taking steps to fire four more employees at Marcy Correctional Facility following the death of inmate Robert Brooks. Brooks died after being beaten by corrections officers in December. The incident was captured on video, showing officers repeatedly punching and kicking Brooks while he was handcuffed, according to CNN.
Governor Kathy Hochul has directed the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) Commissioner Daniel Martuscello to initiate the termination process for those involved. So far, 17 employees have been issued Notices of Discipline and suspended without pay, as reported by RochesterFirst. One employee, Anthony Farina, resigned before the notice was issued.
The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigations is conducting an investigation into Brooks' death. Attorney General Letitia James described the footage as "shocking and disturbing" and pledged to thoroughly investigate the incident. The investigation aims to hold those responsible accountable, as noted by CNYCentral.
