21 shell casings recovered from Abundant Life Christian School shooting

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes released new information about the December 2024 shooting at Abundant Life Christian School.

"A team of detectives is working daily to analyze a significant amount of evidence," Barnes said in an online video message on Thursday.

Barnes revealed investigators recovered 21 shell casings from the scene. While they found two guns, they believe only one was used.

Investigators also believe there is no threat of violence from anyone else connected to this incident.

Barnes said the department cannot share much information about the investigation because he does not want to jeopardize the criminal justice process.

"When information is released prematurely, it can compromise the investigation, jeopardize witness cooperation and most importantly impede a fair trial," Barnes said. "We are committed to transparency and your right to know information, but we must balance that with the obligation to uphold the law."

Barnes acknowledged the community has been pleading for answers, particularly about a possible motive. "Determining a motive is often a complex and challenging process," he said. "There can be multiple factors at play, and it is critical that we approach this investigation with the utmost care and thoroughness."

He said the suspected shooter, 15-year-old Samantha Rupnow, was active online and on social media. Right now, detectives are examining that activity and writing search warrants and subpoenas for social media and tech companies.

Barnes could not verify the validity of a possible manifesto that began circulating following the shooting.

A charging decision will not be made until the Madison Police Department's investigation is complete and that may take weeks or months, Barnes said.

Barnes thanked the Madison community for its ongoing support following the tragedy.
