The New Jersey Health Department reports a significant spike in norovirus cases, with outbreaks rising sharply following holiday gatherings. In December, the state recorded 70 norovirus outbreaks, a stark increase from 15 in December 2023, marking a 66 percent rise. Norovirus, a highly contagious virus causing diarrhea and vomiting, spreads easily and can affect anyone multiple times throughout their life.

Wastewater data from sites in Union Beach, Oakhurst, and Belmar show increased virus levels since November, although Belmar has recently reported a decline. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that this spike is not isolated to New Jersey, with 91 outbreaks reported across 14 states in early December.

Norovirus is transmitted through contaminated surfaces, food, and person-to-person contact. Symptoms can appear within 12 hours of exposure and typically last about 36 hours. Dr. Daniel Varga from Hackensack Meridian Health emphasizes the importance of hydration and rest for recovery, as there is no specific treatment for the virus.

To prevent the spread, thorough handwashing with soap and water is crucial, as hand sanitizers are ineffective against norovirus. Dr. Suraj Kumar Saggar from Holy Name Medical Center told NorthJersey.com that washing hands for at least 20 seconds and avoiding touching the face.
