Pennsylvania Congressman Dan Meuser is reportedly considering a run for governor in 2026. Meuser, a Republican representing the Ninth District, has been in Congress since 2018 and previously served as Pennsylvania's Secretary of Revenue. According to WHTM-TV, Meuser is "seriously" contemplating entering the race. He has expressed a desire for leadership that can elevate Pennsylvania's status among states, citing the need for a vision and plan to attract businesses and young people.
Governor Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, has not yet announced if he will seek re-election. Shapiro, who won the 2022 election with a significant margin, is rumored to have presidential ambitions for 2028. Meuser's potential candidacy comes amid discussions within the Republican Party to present a strong challenge to Shapiro. Other potential Republican candidates include State Treasurer Stacy Garrity, who recently won re-election with a record number of votes.
During an interview with WPHT-AM, Meuser criticized Shapiro's leadership, stating that the state needs to move in a better direction. He also highlighted his experience in the Corbett administration and his commitment to improving state agencies. Meuser told the Philadelphia Inquirer that he is conducting due diligence and has received encouragement to run.
The political landscape in Pennsylvania is gearing up for a competitive gubernatorial race, with several names being floated as potential candidates. As the election approaches, more clarity on the candidates and their platforms is expected.
