Two people were found dead inside the landing gear of a JetBlue plane after it touched down at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Monday (January 6), the airline confirmed in a statement obtained by ABC News on Tuesday (January 7).
The bodies were discovered during a routine maintenance inspection after the Flight 1801, an Airbus A320-232, concluded its flight from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport to Fort Lauderdale just after 11:00 p.m. local time, according to data shared by the flight tracking website FlightAware.com. The two individuals' identities are currently being withheld by JetBlue as the airline continues to investigate how they ended up in the landing gear.
"At this time, the identities of the individuals and the circumstances surrounding how they accessed the aircraft remain under investigation," JetBlue said in the statement obtained by ABC News. "This is a heartbreaking situation, and we are committed to working closely with authorities to support their efforts to understand how this occurred."
The deaths of the two individuals remains under investigation. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport officials said there were no impacts to operations following the incident.
No additional details on the deaths of the two individuals were made public at the time of publication on Tuesday.
