D.C. Library Teams Up with Washington Wizards for Reading Challenge"

When winter sets in, what better way to enjoy the chilly season than with a good book? The DC Public Library has launched its Winter Reading Challenge, offering kids a unique opportunity to read, engage, and win exciting prizes from the Washington Wizards.

“Even if there’s snow all around you, you can walk to the library to get a cozy book to read,” says Tora Burns, Reading Programs Coordinator. “There’s something for everyone during the winter months.”

The challenge, designed for children ages 5 to 19, features a bingo board filled with fun activities. Participants can bring a friend to the library, draw a character from a book, or get a recommendation from a librarian. The goal is to make reading a fun and engaging part of winter.

In addition to reading, the challenge encourages physical activity. “We also encourage you to exercise for 20 minutes and then read for 20 minutes,” Burns explains. “Studies show that developing a habit of reading for 20 minutes daily boosts reading skills and capacity.”

The library also aims to inspire kids to explore different genres, including biographies and graphic novels, which can be particularly appealing to reluctant readers. “Graphic novels and their imagery often encourage children to read,” Burns adds.

Completing five activities in a row on the bingo board earns participants a prize. Rewards include customizable Washington Wizards jerseys, fan packs with bookmarks and basketball hoops, and even tickets to a Wizards game.

Burns encourages families to visit their local library. “The only expectation we have is that you come with questions, curiosity, and kindness. We want our D.C. residents to feel welcome,” she says.

Bingo boards are available at local libraries or online, and the challenge runs until Feb. 28. Don’t miss this chance to make winter reading a slam dunk!
