7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Reported

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake was reported in China on Monday (January 6), according to the United States Geological Survey.

The earthquake was centered in Xizang at a depth of 10.0 kilometers (about 6.2 miles). The USGS said it received 11 reports of people having felt the earthquake at the time of publication.

The China earthquake struck hours after a 3.1-magnitude earthquake was reported in California on Monday, according to the United States Geological Survey. The earthquake was centered in Petrolia at a depth of 2.0 kilometers (about 1.2 miles).

Several other earthquakes have been reported in Petrolia recently, including a a 3.6-magnitude on Friday (January 3), according to the United States Geological Survey. The earthquake was centered at a depth of 3.6 kilometers (about 2.3 miles). A 3.2-magnitude aftershock was also reported in Petrolia on Friday nearly three hours later.

Last month, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake was reported in Petrolia on December 5, according to the United States Geological Survey. The earthquake was centered at a depth of 0.6 kilometers (about 0.37 miles).

A tsunami warning was issued for the San Francisco Bay Area by the National Weather Service following the earthquake report. “Evacuation is recommended. Move to high ground or inland,” the weather service’s advisory system reads," NWS said via the New York Post.

A 5.4-magnitude earthquake was also reported in Petrolia on December 15, according to the United States Geological Survey. The earthquake was centered in Petrolia at a depth of 10 kilometers (about 6.2 miles).
