Miami-Dade, FL - A 10-year-old girl tragically lost her life after being struck by a stray bullet during New Year's celebrations in northwest Miami-Dade.
In the early hours of New Year's Day, a South Florida child was celebrating with her family in the 2100 block of Northwest 27th Avenue when she suddenly collapsed around 1:30 a.m.
Her parents discovered a wound to the back of her head and immediately sought medical assistance.
Hialeah Fire Rescue responded and transported her to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where she was pronounced dead.
According to reports, the child had just turned 10 on December 26th.
Police believe she was struck by a stray bullet fired into the air by an unknown individual from an undetermined location.
Detective Andre Martin emphasized the dangers of celebratory gunfire, telling Local 10 News WPLG, "We speak time and time again every New Year's about the fact that what goes up must come down, and this is a prime example of the dangers of shooting a firearm indiscriminately into the air."
Authorities are urging the person responsible to come forward to provide closure for the grieving family.
Anyone with additional information regarding Wednesday's shooting is asked to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
