Body camera footage showing the assault of inmate Robert Brooks at Marcy Correctional Facility will soon be released to the public. The footage reveals that Brooks, who was handcuffed, was attacked by prison guards on December 9. Brooks was taken to a nearby hospital but died a few hours later on December 10.
According to RochesterFirst, Investigator Ryan Paparella described the video, showing several corrections officers surrounding Brooks, who was lying down with his hands behind his back. Officers Nicholas Anzalone and Anthony Farina were seen striking Brooks, with Anzalone giving him a sternum rub. Brooks was restrained and later seen being forcefully moved by officers David Kingsley and Anzalone.
Governor Kathy Hochul has called for the termination of 14 staff members involved in the incident. CNYCentral reports that the New York State Attorney General's office is investigating the incident, and the footage will be released after Brooks' family has had a chance to view it.
The incident has sparked calls for accountability from local officials, including Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon, Senator Joseph Griffo, and Assemblyman Brian Miller. Governor Hochul has directed the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision Commissioner to begin the termination process for those involved.
Brooks was serving a 12-year sentence for assault in Monroe County. The final cause and manner of his death are still pending, according to CBS6 Albany.
