Grand Rapids residents celebrated the first day of Kwanzaa on Thursday.
The community gathered at the Four Star Theatre and organizer Jewellyne Richardson says they had a lot planned for the event.
The celebration featured the Kinara and its seven candles along with dancing, drummers, music and more.
Kinaras will burn through January 1 across the world with each candle celebrating a core principle of unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.
