A driver is accused of attempted murder in relation to an incident where his vehicle jumped the sidewalk and crashed into a crowd of people in London Christmas morning, Sky News reports.

The driver, identified only as a 31-year-old man, was charged with suspicion of attempted murder for the incident in outside the Sondheim Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue located in the West End region and theatre district of the city, which is the home of the musical Les Misérables, early Tuesday (December 25) morning. Police received a report of a car driving on the wrong side of the road in Shaftesbury Avenue at around 12:45 a.m. local time.

One pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries, the London Metropolitan Police Department confirmed. Police located blood, a jacket, a pair of shoes and a hat at the scene.

London Metro Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy said the department "responded quickly" and detained the man "within minutes."

"It's believed that the suspect was involved in an altercation at a nightclub prior to getting in his car and mounting the pavement," Cundy said.

An investigation is ongoing and "detectives are quickly progressing inquiries," according to Cundy. Officers were seeking any assistance from anyone with information regarding the incident.
