Record holiday travel is leading to significant traffic issues across New Jersey, according to AAA. The agency reports that yesterday was the worst day for road travel this holiday season due to high traffic volumes. AAA advises that the best times to travel are early in the morning or late at night to avoid congestion.
AAA projects that over 119 million people will travel 50 miles or more from home during the year-end holiday period, from Saturday (December 21) to Wednesday (January 1). This year’s travel numbers are expected to surpass the previous record set in 2019 by 64,000 travelers. Nearly 90% of holiday travelers will be driving to their destinations, with 107 million people expected to travel by car nationwide. In New Jersey, over 2.45 million residents are expected to drive to their holiday destinations.
Gas prices are lower this year, with the national average at $3.03 per gallon, which is encouraging more people to travel by car. In New Jersey, the average price is even lower at $2.91 per gallon.
AAA also expects air travel to set a new record this holiday season, with 7.85 million passengers nationwide. Nearly 193,000 New Jersey residents are projected to travel by air.
For those driving, AAA recommends avoiding peak travel times, which are typically between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. The best times to drive are before 11 a.m. or after the evening commute.
As the holiday season continues, travelers are advised to plan their trips carefully and remain patient on the roads.
