Alanis Morrisette -----with her version of "Oh, Holy Night" Christmas 2024

Alanis Morissette got into the holiday spirit this season by releasing a lulling version of the hymn "O Holy Night" -- but not everyone is ready to sing along.

That's because Alanis changed the lyrics, which recounts the birth of Jesus, using feminine pronouns in the second part of the song. She said her intention was to "promote peace and healing," and most of her fans agreed, giving the version a thumbs-up. Some right-wing websites and news outlets disagreed, calling the change "disrespectful" and even blasphemous.

Alanis is no stranger to this sort of controversy: She caused a firestorm by playing a female version of God in Kevin Smith's Dogma back in 1999.
