The contentious race for Speaker of the Texas House isn't slowing down. Rep. Dustin Burrows continues to push for the title despite losing the GOP caucus vote to Rep. David Cook. Burrows has even gone as far as to call himself "Speaker-elect" in recent days.
State Representative Steve Toth is now calling him out for it, because for one thing, that title doesn't actually exist. He said, "Burrows lost the election. He lost it 48 to 12. You haven't won any elections, so I'm not sure how you can call yourself 'elect' when you haven't won any elections."
Toth pointed out a recent effort by supporters of Burrows to make it look like Burrows had secured an endorsement from Governor Greg Abbott, who had to step in himself to deny the claims. Toth said, "I put out a tweet calling it deceptive. The governor retweeted my tweet saying, 'That's correct, I haven't endorsed Dustin Burrows at all.'"
Toth also says that he's completely astounded by this ongoing effort by Burrows to secure the speaker's gavel against the wishes of Texans. He said, "This isn't a middle finger to me, or my colleagues, it's a massive betrayal of the people of Texas."
Toth says that this is all going to come back to haunt Burrows and his allies, because the voters aren't just going to forget about this debacle.
