Syracuse, N.Y. - A Syracuse City Court judge has raised some eyebrows after she refused to perform a wedding ceremony for a same-sex couple.
Last month Judge Felicia Pitts Davis performed a wedding ceremony for a heterosexual couple, but left the courtroom refusing to marry two women, on religious grounds. Another Judge stepped in to perform the marriage.
Syracuse City Auditor Alexander Marion said in a statement, it was deeply disturbing that Judge Pitts-Davis refused to perform a same-sex wedding and asked the Judge to step down. Marion said "Judicial guidelines clearly state New York State judges who perform weddings cannot refuse to perform weddings based on the gender of the couple. Members of community, regardless their sexual orientation, deserve better. I believe it is just and appropriate for Judge Pitts-Davis to step down so all the people of our community can be assured they receive equal treatment under the law. If she does not, the Office of Court Administration should promptly suspend her from the bench.”
Officials say, the State Commission on Judicial Conduct is looking into the matter.
