The New York State Comptroller's Office has issued a warning about a scam targeting the state's public retirement system. The scam involves a fake website that mimics the Retirement Online site, which is used by hundreds of thousands of current and former public sector employees enrolled through the New York State and Local Retirement System. The scammers aim to trick users into logging into the fake site to steal their login credentials.

According to the Comptroller's Office, there is no evidence at this time of any member, retiree, or beneficiary data being compromised. "Protecting the integrity of your personal information is our priority. We are actively working with the authorities and our IT staff to monitor the situation and identify anyone affected," read the scam alert. The office advises users to access the Retirement Online website only through the state comptroller’s website to avoid falling victim to the scam.

Despite the increase in cyber threats, with over 25,000 cyber attacks reported in New York in 2022, the Comptroller's Office reassures that the system and members' information remains secure. "To be clear, there was no cyber attack on NYSLRS Retirement Online," spokeswoman Rebecca Dangoor said in a statement. According to the New York State Comptroller's Office, they alert members for their protection whenever they become aware of scams that affect them.
