Miami-Dade, FL - The Miami-Dade County Commission has approved renaming Palm Avenue in Hialeah to “President Donald J. Trump Avenue."
Following a formal request by the City of Hialeah, the decision honors the former president's contributions and aligns with the city’s ongoing recognition of Trump’s policies and leadership during his presidency.
The renamed stretch of Palm Avenue spans the entirety of its route within Hialeah’s city limits, which serves as a central artery dividing the eastern and western parts of the city.
The initiative was first proposed during a rally held by Trump at Ted Hendricks Stadium in November 2023.
Shortly after, the Hialeah City Council unanimously passed a resolution to support the renaming.
Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera sponsored the renaming proposal, citing Trump’s economic achievements, including the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, as well as his efforts in supporting Cuban American communities, a significant demographic in Hialeah.
On December 3, 2024, the county commission voted in favor of the co-designation, solidifying its approval.
While the renaming has received substantial backing from Trump supporters and local officials, it has also sparked some controversy.
Critics argue that Trump lacks a direct historical connection to Hialeah and have raised concerns about his legal and political controversies.
Previously, in June 2022, Hialeah’s Historic Preservation Board recommended against renaming Palm Avenue due to potential backlash, though the city council retained final authority on the matter.
This latest designation places Hialeah alongside other cities that have named public spaces in honor of Trump, including a segment of U.S. Route 287 in Oklahoma and the Donald J. Trump Justice Complex in Nevada.
