Two flight attendants were removed from a plane in Amsterdam after failing a pre-flight breathalyzer test. The two attendants were preparing to depart Schiphol Airport on a Delta Air Lines flight for New York City when they were summoned for a test by Dutch authorities.
Under Dutch law, flight attendants are not allowed to drink for up to ten hours before the flight and must have a blood alcohol level of under 0.02.
On Friday (November 29), officials said that three people failed the random tests. According to the NL Times, one of the Delta flight attendants registered 0.143 on the breathalyzer, which is over seven times the legal limit. As a result, she was fined over $1,900. A male flight attendant was fined nearly $290 after registering a 0.024 blood alcohol level on the breathalyzer.
"Delta's alcohol policy is among the strictest in the industry, and we have no tolerance for violation," Delta Air Lines said in a statement. "The employees were removed from their scheduled duties, and the flight departed as scheduled."
A third flight attendant on a different airline also failed the test and was fined more than $1,800 after the breathalyzer determined their blood alcohol level was 0.13.
