Monday (11/25) was a somber anniversary of the day we lost a beacon of Black People Magic in Chicago.
The date marked the 37th anniversary of when we lost former Chicago Mayor Harold Washington in 1987. Civil rights activists, local aldermen, state lawmakers, faith leaders and so many others impacted by the legacy of Chicago’s first Black Mayor gathered that day for the annual wreath laying ceremony at his grave in Oak Woods Cemetery.
Speakers and attendees included former State Representative Mary E. Flowers, State Senator Mattie Hunter, former Alderman David H. Moore (17th) and former Alderman Dorothy Wright Tillman… they shared personal stories of working beside Washington, honoring him as a man who put his heart in the city, working for the common good and common goals of its people.
Mayor Washington passed away the day before thanksgiving in 1987, only months after his re-election, suffering a fatal heart attack in his office at City Hall at the age of 65.
