AAA is expecting a record number of travelers on the road this Thanksgiving week. It's a long holiday with people leaving earlier and coming back later than in the past.
"Some schools get out on Tuesday, some get out on Wednesday, so that's going to alter your traffic flows in town." Says Brian Ortner, AAA Nebraska and Iowa. "And some businesses potentially close early on Wednesday."
Ortner says some Thanksgiving travelers will take an extra day at the end of the holiday weekend and return on Monday, December 2nd.
Ortner says the heaviest traffic will be from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. the days before Thanksgiving. He recommends leaving early, in the morning, to avoid the heaviest traffic.
AAA is predicting record travel over the Thanksgiving holiday, 79.9 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles. Most of them will go by car, although air travel is expected to be up more than 2% higher than last year.
