Why Not to Skip Over Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is almost here but a political cartoon this week featured a huge sign that read “Merry Christmas” with a tiny turkey holding a tiny sign that said what about Thanksgiving?.

Anyone who has walked into almost any store, from grocery stores to hardware stores should not be surprised. Christmas decorations and gifts have been all over for many weeks now.

And despite what you hear a lot of people say about the Christmas shopping season beginning too early, it seems to keep starting earlier and earlier every year.

Christmas in July sales are not uncommon. And by mid-October it is often fully underway.

It’s no secret why. The earlier we start seeing Christmas things in stores and deals on line, the more shoppers shop and the more stores make more money.

And while Thanksgiving decorations are around, you already have seen  Christmas lights and displays on houses in many neighborhoods.

Seems as if a lot of people go from displaying Halloween pumpkins and ghouls to putting out Santa in his sleigh and the Grinch in Whoville in their front yards and just skip over Thanksgiving.

It’s too bad really. Thanksgiving is an American holiday and with it having been a year filled with the anxiousness of a divisive presidential campaign, a time to say thanks for and a time to focus on the real blessings of life like family, friends and faith is something we all can use.
