Crew Member Tosses $3 Million Andy Warhol Brillo Pad Sculpture Away

Back in 1964, pop artist Andy Warhol was very much into consumerism and made sculptures inspired by various products. One such sculpture was of a carton of Brillo Pads. One of them became the topic of an HBO documentary, as it sold for $3 million at auction. What that context comes this tragedy of artistic proportions. A crew member on a superyacht, which was pretty much a “floating gallery,” is in hot water after not recognizing the piece as “valuable art,” and thinks it legitimately was just an old wooden box of Brillo Pads suitable for the trash. The financial liability ramifications are huge because it calls into question how the artwork was stored and displayed, how the crew was trained, and whose responsibility it was to safeguard the valuables on the superyacht.
