Social Dilemma: Is the Phrase "Suck It Up Buttercup" Sexist?

Today's 98.3 TRY Social Dilemma came from Aaron and it's about a work situation. Here's his email: Hi Jaime. I can't believe this is happening. I'm shocked and embarrassed to even be writing this, but I’ve just learned that there’s been a complaint lodged against me at work. I received notice from my HR department that a complaining coworker took issue with the fact that I told them to “suck it up, buttercup” when they didn’t want to do their job. Her point is that “buttercup” is a “sexist term” and that I’d never say that to a man. I have probably six male coworkers who would disagree with that argument, but I put it to you…is “suck it up, buttercup” really sexist? Can I really get reprimanded for this? Hope you can help me out. Thanks so much ~ Aaron. I'm not sure about this. I mean "buttercup" is a nickname you would call a woman and not a man, but that being said, this is a phrase that's been around forever and has been used on both men and women. Honestly, I dislike the phrase for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is it downplays whatever someone might be saying to you, and telling someone to suck it up when they have a problem isn't very helpful. That's just my take. What do you think? Is it sexist? Is it okay? Let's help Aaron out and let me know on the TRY Facebook page.
