JAMESTOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- For the second time in two days, a lightning strike has caused a fire in West Michigan.
The latest occurred just after 1 o'clock Tuesday morning in Jamestown Township.
Township firefighters say in a Facebook post that they knocked down the house fire within a half-hour of their arrival on scene. The location was Riley Street near 8th Avenue.
Firefighters believe it was started by a lightning strike. A tanker shuttle was set up to supply water to the engine and ladder truck that was used to fight the fire. Crews from the Byron and Zeeland township fire departments assisted Jamestown firefighters.
The scene cleared around 5:30 a.m.
Yesterday, the Padnos plant on Letellier Street near Front Avenue caught on fire. Grand Rapids Fire investigators later said it was caused by a lightning strike around 3 a.m. Monday. A thunderstorm was rolling through at the time. Fire Marshal William Smith said security camera footage showed a flash of lightning near the manufacturing building.
Deputy Fire Chief Jack Johnson told WOOD Radio more than 60 firefighters responded to the Padnos fire.
No injuries were reported in either fire. Byron and Zeeland township fire crews assisted Jamestown firefighters at the scene of the Tuesday morning fire on Riley Street.
