Consumers Energy, Muskegon County break ground on new solar energy center

Officials from Consumers Energy and Muskegon County broke ground on the Muskegon Solar Energy Center this morning.

The center is expected to be a major expansion of clean energy in the state of Michigan, as well as being Consumer Energy's first self-owned large-scale solar project.

The groundbreaking took place at the Muskegon County Resource Recovery Center in Moorland Township located at 1043 S. Swanson Road in Ravenna, where construction will now begin to develop the 250-megawatt facility.

Scheduled to be completed in 2026, it will power up to 40,000 homes at a time.

“The Muskegon Solar Energy Center is proof positive that we can tap solar to deliver transformative economic and environmental benefits for residents and the communities they call home,” said David Hicks, Consumers Energy’s vice president of clean energy development.
