Restaurant Sues Man Who Left Waitress $3K Tip

A $3K tip has turned into a lawsuit. In June of 2022, a waitress at Alfredo’s Café, in Scranton, PA, was shocked to find out that customer had left her a three-grand tip on a $13.25 stromboli bill. Server Mariana Lambert was left speechless and filled with emotion, and manager Matt Martini even chased the customer down to make sure the tip was legit.

  • The customer, Eric Smith, had written “Tips for Jesus” on the check – a reference to a social media trend, and reportedly said he was inspired to leave the tip after experiencing “Lambert’s hospitality”
  • A few weeks later, the restaurant received a letter that said the charge, and the tip, were being disputed
  • Aside from the moral and ethical issues, there was now the problem that Alfredo’s had already given Lambert the $3K…and were forced to reimburse Smith “out of their own pockets”

After trying to reach Smith over social media, Alfredo’s owners finally decided to file a civil lawsuit against him…this after Smith reportedly told them they would have to just that. To rally around Alfredo’s, the community started a Go Fund Me, but restaurant management refused to accept the money and the fundraiser was shut down. Jesus, for whom the tip was left in the name of, couldn’t be reached for comment.
