8 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Black Widows

So I have a lot of these in my yard on the westside. I think they like the sand and the warmth. But I have a lot of cinderblock around the house with retaining walls and such, so that’s where they make their nests.

One thing that I learned that that the males are more of a tan color and don’t have the big bulge (egg sack) that the females do. They almost look like a daddy long legs spider.

So here are a few things that I didn’t know:

  • Legend has it that the female kills the male after mating, but bug experts think that’s not necessarily true
  • When the babies hatch, the bigger ones eat the smaller ones
  • Red coloring is in the shape of an hourglass
  • And that red warns birds and wasps, who would normally eat them!

Check out all 8 of the things you didn’t know about black widows.
