Ever See an Osprey Dive For Fish?

While up in the Acadia/Mt Desert Island area, I got to watch Osprey go fishing!

They circle around a pond or water- find their prey- then hover for a few seconds, before launching into a dive - straight INTO the water- and come up with a fish.

At this place- they were fishing Alewife fish. I guess those fish travel to Maine every summer to swim up the same stream to spawn there. Every year, they come back to the same place.

So here's the sequence- they dive from about 40 feet high- like a bullet toward the water-

then they hit -

they grab the fish and hold on -

And with a couple of flaps of their wings-

they're up and out of the water-

and the cool thing is - they ALWAYS end up holding the fish- head first. Pretty cool how they do that so quickly!

Cool birds to watch. Wicked fast, and very challenging to shoot, photographically.
